History & trivia of Killington Lake

First opened in 1972 as a partnership between Roadchef and BP, Killington Lake services had a unique foundation. It was one of the first service stations in the UK to be intentionally built as far away from the Motorway as possible. This innovative approach provided the opportunity to utilise the views the Lake could offer to customers and give a sense of separation from a long road trip. During 1985 the services underwent a full renovation, with the entire amenity building being rebuilt. This proved to be a positive decision as in 1986 Which? magazine labelled Killington Lake one of the most attractive service stations in the UK. Since the initial rebuild in 1985 the service station has kept with the times and planning permission was granted in 2019 to perform large renovations. This included expansion in all directions, providing larger seating areas, additional shops such as Spar and WHSmith alongside a games arcade. During this renovation the Costa was moved to have a greater view of the lake, similar to that of Annandale Water.
