Trivia & history of Magor Services
Magor Services was a station that came into fruition because of the recently built second Severn crossing, meaning that the original Severn view service station would become redundant due to a large decrease in traffic. The first owners were Granada and Esso who had applications approved in 1990 and opened the services officially in 1992. A few years later in 1996 Granada attempted to purchase four other service stations and were therefore instructed to sell both the Magor and Severn View sites. The Magor station was sold to First after a management change and they owned it for the next 15 years until it was eventually sold to us here at Roadchef. Magor Services is one of the largest and busiest motorway services in Wales, however this was under threat by a proposed plan to create an M4 bypass, potentially leaving Magor 2 miles away from the main motorway, similar to that of what happened to Severn view with the second crossing. These plans were first drafted up in 1991, then again in 2013 but cancelled in 2019. The initial building for Magor was not a traditional service station set-up, having the restaurant and main catering facility placed in the middle with everything else surrounding. This was sometimes confusing for customers and described as a ‘myriad of corridors’. Since then we have renovated the entrance, which guides customers to where they need to be.
