The M5 runs from the junction with the M6 at West Bromwich, Birmingham to Exminster, Devon heading towards the English Riviera and Cornwall. The motorway was built in 1962 and passes through some of the UK’s famous historic cities including Birmingham, Worcester, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Bristol.
The motorway has junctions for other motorways too; with links to the M42 at Junction 4a, M50 at Junction 8, M4 at Junction 15 and M49 at Junction 18a.
Of the five Roadchef motorway services on the M5, three are on the southbound carriageway and two are on the northbound carriageway.

There are five Roadchef motorway services on the M5, three headed southbound and two headed northbound. Find your most convenient location below
M5 services southbound
Heading Southbound, the first motorway services you’ll pass when travelling on the M5 is Strensham Southbound, between J7 and J8, near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. The site was the first motorway services on the M5 and originally opened in 1962 alongside the opening M5. The site has changed considerably over the last six decades though.
The site now welcomes visitors from all over the UK 365 days a year and is busiest throughout the summer. The site has a 24/7 McDonald’s, serving breakfast ‘til 11am, Britain’s favourite coffee shop Costa Coffee, LEON, Chozen Noodle and Cornish Bakery.
A 24/7 WHSmith store accompanies a SPAR unit at the site too. The pair of stores has all the essentials you need for your journey towards the South West including groceries, drinks, magazines, newspapers, sweet treats and more.
The site has a Cotton Traders on-site for those last-minute fashion decisions from one of the UK’s most iconic sportswear and outdoor clothing stores.
Outside the main amenity building, four medium-powered EV chargers - offering up to 100kW at 79p per kWh - allow green drivers to recharge whilst refuelling themselves with a great range of food and drink.
For those who don’t want to leave the comfort of their vehicle, Strensham Southbound boasts a Costa Coffee Drive-Thru for all your favourite hot and cold drinks.
As you head nearer to Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, you’ll find Roadchef Sedgemoor Southbound. Originally named Brent Knoll, the site became a motorway service area in 1987.
Open 24/7, the site is located between J21 and J22 of the M5 motorway, just 11 miles from the Somerset village of Bridgwater.
When visiting the site, you’ll find 24-hour McDonald’s and WHSmith units alongside Costa Coffee, for all your refreshment needs. Outside the main amenity building is a Costa Coffee Drive-Thru, for those who don’t want to leave their vehicles for their favourite hot and cold drinks.
There are more of the UK’s biggest brands in the Somerset motorway service area too - including LEON, Chozen Noodle, Cornish Bakery and SPAR.
Two EV chargers at Roadchef Sedgemoor Southbound help power sustainable drivers towards the beaches in Devon and Cornwall.
Roadchef’s most southerly site on the M5 is Taunton Deane Southbound, the final Roadchef motorway service area before the motorway becomes the A38.
Taunton Deane Southbound both boast a 24/7 McDonald’s, a 24-hour WHSmith, Britain’s favourite coffee shop - Costa Coffee and a variety of Asian dishes from Chozen Noodle.

Heading back towards Birmingham, we have a pair of Roadchef motorway services. Strensham Northbound offers a similar selection to Strensham Southbound to keep travellers on the M5 happy, refreshed and relaxed. Strensham Northbound is perfect for that pit stop before heading towards the Midlands.

Other Roadchef motorway services, on routes off the M5
The M5 has links to the M4 and M6. Both these motorways have Roadchef motorway services of their own, with six to choose from - two on the M4 and four on the M6.
The M4 - heading west from the M5 at J15 Bristol to South Wales near Llanelli - has two Roadchef motorway services at Magor and Pont Abraham.
Further north, the M5 meets the M6 heading both North towards the Lake District and South towards London. The M6 has four Roadchef sites, with Sandbach Northbound on the Northbound carriageway whilst Killington Lake, near Kendal, Cumbria, Sandbach Southbound and Stafford Southbound are on the opposing carriageway.

There are only five locations on the M5 motorway with a McDonald's - and luckily for you, they are all Roadchef motorway services. Heading Southbound, you can find a 24/7 McDonald's at Strensham Southbound, Sedgemoor Southbound and Taunton Deane Southbound.
Heading northbound back towards Birmingham, you'll be able to get all your favourite burgers at our 24-hour McDonald's at Taunton Deane Northbound and Strensham Northbound.
How long is the M5 motorway?
Built in the early-1960s with the current iteration of the motorway opening in 1977, the M5 motorway is 163 miles and takes roughly 3 hours and 40 minutes to travel the full length. The M5 motorway has 34 junctions, plus Junction 8 of the M6 where the M5 merges with the M6.
Where does the M5 motorway start and finish?
The M5 starts at Junction 1, located near West Bromwich, Birmingham and runs South, finishing in Exeter at Junction 31.
Is the M5 a smart motorway?
Smart motorways are a form of intelligent traffic management, whereby the situation on the carriageway can be adapted to suit the circumstances. This includes changing speed limits, opening the hard shoulder for traffic flow and closing individual lanes following incidents. Although the whole of the M5 cannot be classed as a smart motorway, Junction 15 at the Almondsbury Interchange and Junction 17 at Bristol has smart motorway technology installed.
Does the M5 motorway have tolls?
The M5 does not have any tolls, as the M6 Toll is the only tolled motorway in the UK. The M6 Toll only has one motorway services, Roadchef Norton Canes. The nearest toll to the M5 is the Clifton Suspension Bridge at Bristol, which connects Bristol to North Somerset.
