Sustainability
Energy
It's all about the energy - lighting, heating, electricity, oil and gas that is! Across our 30 (and counting) sites, we've got a key focus to reduce our energy usage whilst ensuring that - anything we do use - is responsibly, ethically and sustainably sourced.
We're also working hard to implement more energy capture methods across the Roadchef estate - be that solar panels or wind turbines to ensure we can power your break as easy as you power your journey.
Through simple changes like smart light sensors to delving deeper into our site data, we're making changes to ensure that we can continue to deliver the experience we're known for, just greener!
And we're not just starting this now. Our sites have been fitted with solar panels since 2015 and currently over 50% of our electricity supply is sourced from 100% clean energy.
We're harnessing the sun
Solar Power
We've been harnessing the sun's power since 2015 - installing solar arrays at 23 of our sites. These 4,884 panels generate over 1,169,000 kWhs of energy every year.
Our energy supplier
Over 50% of our electricity demand is sourced from 100% green energy and £1.6m of our annual energy costs goes towards renewable generation investments for communities
A really bright idea
All of our lights are timed and have motion sensors built into them ensuring that no light is left on unnecessarily; reducing our energy usage from our toilets to our staff rooms
Fun fact
Energy saving light-bulbs, such as LEDS, last roughly twelve times longer than normal filament bulbs!
Reducing our gas usage
Our company is dedicated to reducing gas consumption by transitioning to electric-powered systems. We are replacing gas-powered boilers and heat exchangers with electric alternatives to improve energy efficiency. Additionally, we are moving our entire fleet to electric vehicles, significantly cutting fuel use and emissions. To encourage others, we are installing EV charging stations at all our service areas, promoting the adoption of electric vehicles. These initiatives, combined with ongoing efforts to optimise energy use, reflect our commitment to a sustainable future and substantial reduction in gas consumption.
